The stately Great Blue Heron was once considered uncommon in portions of Ohio. Their numbers were greatly diminished due to repeated persecution and by the millinery trade during the 1800's. Now, under complete protection, they are numerous and widely distributed residents in this state. Great Blues are the epitome of patience. They stand motionless for hours or move silently, stalking their aquatic prey along Lake Erie's marshes and wetlands.
