BACK TO THE WILD'S MISSION STATEMENT
BACK TO THE WILD'S PRIMARY MISSION: To rehabilitate and ultimately release into their natural habitat, injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife.
Through this work, BACK TO THE WILD's overall mission is to educate and foster in children and adults, awareness, appreciation and respect of our natural world. Children especially, are encouraged to become responsible caretakers of our earth, by becoming involved in conservation activities to preserve and protect wild areas and to understand our own interconnection with all living things.
DEAR FRIENDS OF BACK TO THE WILD
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL ! ! !
* * * 1990 - 2010 * * *
20 YEARS of WILDLIFE RESCUE!
20 YEARS of TEACHING YOUNG MINDS about our natural world!
20 YEARS of WORKING TOGETHER . . .
It seems unbelievable! As 2011 begins, BACK TO THE WILD will be entering our 21st year of wildlife rehabilitation and nature education! How is it possible?! How did this organization that began in our backyard over 20 years ago, in one small barn, become what it is today? We know it all happened because of YOU - our dedicated volunteers and generous supporters! Because of caring people like you, we have been able to dedicate our minds, hearts and lives to BACK TO THE WILD'S mission of wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education. Because of YOU, our doors have been open to the community for over 20 years, to accept injured wildlife any hour of the day, every day of the year. Because of YOU, over 70,000 children and adults visit BACK TO THE WILD or attend one of our many educational programs every year where they are encouraged to respect, appreciate, preserve and protect our natural world. And, because of YOU, we have been able to build an outstanding facility to share with people of all ages, from pre-schoolers to seniors, and a facility that allows us to do the best job possible "housing and healing" our injured wildlife patients! The fact that this organization has grown so fast and strong is proof that our work in wildlife rehabilitation and nature education is a much-needed service in every community and that YOU ~ our supporters ~ truly believe in our work! Thanks to all of you, we have once again rescued over 2,500 injured wild animals this year and have been able to return over 60% back into the wild!
The thrill of releasing a wildling back into the wild and being able to play a part in opening a child's eyes to the wonders of nature, are the two most rewarding parts of our everyday life here at BACK TO THE WILD. It is a privilege sharing it all with you, our supporters, and the thousands of visitors who stop by each year! We love giving you the opportunity to meet many of our wildlife residents, and to learn about their importance in the natural world.
The purpose of this annual newsletter is two-fold. First of all, we want to keep you informed of our work and the positive impact BACK TO THE WILD is making in the community. It is our way of telling you how your donations continue to make a difference! Secondly ~ we hope you will consider this letter ~ an urgent plea for your help!
It should come as no surprise to you to learn that BACK TO THE WILD has been facing a financial challenge the past two years. Sadly, we have experienced a more than significant drop in donations, as have all charities, creating a serious financial crisis for us. Our dual mission of ~ wildlife rehabilitation and education ~ is an overwhelming task on a daily basis. Injured animals continue to arrive daily ~ including songbirds, herons, egrets, ducks, geese, hawks, owls, eagles, rabbits, squirrels, fox, opossums, skunks, snakes, turtles, salamanders and other wildlings ~ each species requiring special diets, medication and housing. While the physical work required to rehabilitate injured wildlife is extremely labor-intensive and demanding, it is the least of our problems. During these financially troubled times, we have had to learn to do more ~ with less. We have made great efforts to use our limited resources as wisely as possible, cutting operating expenses wherever we can. With donations declining, and food, medical and utility costs rising, we need your support more than ever! Seeking every way possible to find funding to "keep our doors open" continues to be our most daunting task. To keep our doors open means that we need a staff on board every single day. A center this size requires a staff of at least 20 employees, but with limited financial resources, we are forced to operate with a skeleton crew that must care for over 2,500 animals throughout the year! Our modest crew of just seven full and part-time employees achieve the work of a staff three times its size!
We are so proud of our fantastic staff: Our well-trained staff is always informative and accommodating to ensure your visit with family and friends is a memorable experience. We are pleased to receive many comments and compliments from visitors who have stopped in for a tour and wanted us to know that even though a staff member was very busy, they were met with genuine friendliness and professionalism.
Sarah Langdon, our Staff Supervisor, and Heather Yount are our only full-time employees; Julie Ladd, Judi Robles, Kelcy Drumm, John Staugh and David Bauman are valuable part-time employees. Past employees, Melissa Dodge, Libby Boros, Cheryl Crosser, Mike Limbird, Barry Unger and Ben Dennis continue to offer welcome extra help whenever they can! Finally, without our dedicated volunteers, we truly could not keep up! Always on call and more than willing to lend a hand are volunteers Martha Dykes, Doug and Debbie Haubert, Earl and Mary Wetzel, Sheryl Young, Jennifer Jackway, Jill Groves, Linda Goretzki, Sharon Parish and Shirley Gant. Special thanks to Bill Biehl who donates countless hours planting, weeding, watering and maintaining our many beautiful gardens on the grounds! In addition, we have dozens of other amazing volunteers and high school and college students who help intermittently and seasonally. Kyle Capodice, Devin Sweeting, Kassie Leasure, Heidi Shoemaker and Tori Brauer contributed many long hours throughout the summer! Along with our staff, they all do a fantastic job helping to run the center, answering endless phone calls, rescuing and transporting wildlife, feeding and caring for patients, making trips to the vets, picking up supplies, greeting visitors, providing dozens of tours daily, educating school, youth and scout groups here at the center and off-site, and performing countless other tasks!
To say they are important is an understatement! Their dedication is amazing and they are our inspiration!
We welcome your call to schedule a time to visit and tour BACK TO THE WILD to learn more about our work. Meet our staff and volunteers and see them in action! Join one of our educational presentations taking place in our amphitheater almost every day in the spring, summer and fall. If you have not visited the center in the past year or two, you will be amazed at our newest exhibits and improvements! You will also have the opportunity to see some behind the scenes help offered to our wildlife patients, although we are very careful to protect each wildlife patient from human disturbance ~ to keep them wild! Many of our permanent, educational birds and mammals may be photographed or sketched. Learn about the different ways you may be able to help us help wildlife! When planning your family outings or visits with friends, remember to re-visit and tour BACK TO THE WILD!
A CALL AHEAD WILL HELP OUR STAFF SET ASIDE SPECIAL TIME FOR YOU!
FOR TOURS AND VISITS, DONATIONS ARE MUCH-NEEDED AND GREATLY APPRECIATED

We do have several informative brochures we are more than willing to share with you and will gladly send at your request. We are often asked for our literature and feel it is important to circulate, since it frequently generates donations. Again, we are making every effort to use our resources wisely. In handing out literature, we carefully monitor the success or failure it achieves in generating support! We apologize if you have mistakenly received our literature more than once and would greatly appreciate if you would kindly pass it along to someone who may be interested in our work. You can help us spread the word !!!
If you do not wish to receive our literature or no longer want to be on our mailing list, please do notify us by phone or e-mail and we will honor your request!

We believe in and are fiercely passionate about our work. We believe we have made a deep commitment in dedicating our lives to help make a difference for wildlife in need. We believe through education, we can help children become responsible caretakers of the earth and not repeat the mistakes of past generations. We believe, with your help, we can and will continue our work here at BACK TO THE WILD and that we can make you proud to be one of our steadfast supporters! We promise to continue to work around the clock ~ 365 days of the year ~ helping wildlife in need.
We simply can't do it without you!
So, with much chagrin but absolute necessity, I am pleading for our cause. We are counting on caring citizens like you to help us at this critical time. We are reaching out to those of you who may be in a position to help! Every donation, no matter what size, will directly benefit BACK TO THE WILD'S mission and work in the community.
We are happy to have this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks for your past support ~ we are truly honored to know that you believe in our work! We regret that it is virtually impossible to name each and every one of our supporters and volunteers in this letter. It is important to us to acknowledge your support! A visit to BACK TO THE WILD will allow you to see we proudly display your names on plaques and pavers throughout the center!

NATURE IS A PART OF OUR HUMANITY.
HENRY BESTON
The following information is repeated from last year's letter, but we are continually amazed to find that many first-time visitors who drop off an injured animal, or stop in for a tour, have discovered us for the first time! We are always surprised to hear the following comments repeated time and time again:
- "I had no idea of the scope of what you are doing here."
- You might have to see it to believe it!
- "You should advertise more, because no one knows you are here!"
- There really are over a hundred newspaper stories, magazine articles and T.V. clips out there - both locally and nationally. We exhibit and educate at schools, youth camps, park districts, libraries, civic groups, the Ohio State Fair and numerous other events throughout Ohio each year.
- "Aren't you employed by the State?"
- No. BACK TO THE WILD stands alone. Our wildlife services to the public, and our work in animal rescue and rehabilitation is a free service to the public, at our expense. Although wildlife rehabilitators are required to hold both State and Federal Permits, we receive NO funding at all. We operate under very strict government regulations and are subject to facility inspections. Accurate daily records must be maintained, detailing the reason each wild animal is taken in, the county it came from and its final disposition. We are licensed by ODNR, Division of Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior.
- "We visited your facility and found it very clean and well organized. Your staff went out of their way to provide us with a friendly, professional and informative tour!!!
- Thanks so much for noticing and for your kind comments ~ it means a lot to us!
- "Will any of our donations be used to pay "help" or to pay for "utilities?"
- Yes, it is crucial that donations be used for all aspects that encompass operating our center ~ donations are our only way to feed and care for all the animals, to provide the best care possible for them, to build necessary shelters and pay the endless bills. The animals in our care require daily (even hourly) scheduled feedings, medical treatment, therapy and other care. A hired, trained and licensed staff is an absolute necessity, to assure help is always available at critical times. Our volunteers selflessly give our staff much-needed helping hands and are truly treasured and valuable to us, however, most volunteers have regular jobs and families and are not always available to cover early hours of the morning and night shifts, weekends and holidays.
- "Aren't you interfering with nature by caring for wildlife?"
- Here is our chance to educate callers and visitors who are asking for our assistance ~ Over 90% of the injuries to wild animals that are received at any rehabilitation center, are the direct result of negative human impact on wildlife habitats and their food chain. We are very careful not to intervene in a wild animal's life, unless it is due to a human-related cause. We advise and discourage the public from feeding wildlife, as it almost always leads to the animal's demise. Improper diets cause serious nutritional disorders in wildlife and repeated human contact causes them to lose their "edge" on instinctive survival mechanisms. This will eventually surely lead to their death.
THEY DO NOT BELONG TO US - THEY BELONG TO THE WILD!

A MEMORABLE MOMENT . . .
IN LOVING MEMORY OF RON PEARSON
BACK TO THE WILD was deeply saddened to lose a long-time dear friend and supporter on February 25th, 2010. We met Ron through his wife Laura, who brought an injured Screech Owl to our center many years ago. That day, I met the most compassionate, caring, spiritual, and giving woman I had ever known. Laura was emotional about the little owl's outcome and filled with excitement when we were able to release the owl back into its natural habitat in the woods behind their home! This all started an amazing friendship with Ron and Laura's entire family! Their children, Kim and her husband Bob, and Paul and his wife Kathy, and grandchildren Collin, Aiden and Ryan love to visit the center. They have done so much to promote our work in so many ways through the years. The Pearson family has all been a very wonderful part of BACK TO THE WILD!
The Bald Eagles at our center have always held a special place in Ron and Laura's hearts. When Laura decided to plan a memorial service in celebration of Ron's life on June 18th, their 50th wedding anniversary, I knew that things happen for a reason. On February 15th, we had rescued an injured Bald Eagle very near Ron and Laura's home. At that time, Ron's illness had worsened and he was hospitalized soon after. When Ron passed away, Laura and I remarked on the symbolism that the eagle had come into this picture somehow. I realized, that after several months of rehabilitation, this was the same time the Eagle was going to be ready for release. It just made perfect sense. I asked Laura if she would like the eagle released in memory of Ron, very near where it had been found injured. She was thrilled with joy and we both knew it was meant to be. On June 18th, family and friends of the Pearson family came from many states, to celebrate his life. Before the service, they assembled in an open, grassy field, surrounded by acres of woods and a nearby river. Together, Laura and I lofted a very anxious Bald Eagle into the air and returned him back to the wild ~ in loving memory of Ron. It was a most memorable moment for me as a wildlife rehabilitator and reminds me how humbled and honored I am to be able to experience this unparalleled gift of nature. Ten days later, Laura was driving down the main road from her house, when two Bald Eagles flying very close together, flew right over her car, so near, she could hardly believe it! There was no doubt ~ she and I just knew the eagle had reunited with his mate! It had to be more than just a coincidence. It seemed complete.
When an injured animal arrives at BACK TO THE WILD.
On a typical spring or summer day, visitors arrive hourly, bearing bundles of fur, feathers or scales, tucked away in boxes, buckets, bags and blouses! Our incubators and clinic overflow each day with bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks, opossums, skunks, fox kits, songbirds, ducklings, herons, egrets, hawks, owls, turtles and more. These caring people are very happy to find us ready and willing to offer them a solution to their wildlife crisis! After stabilizing the wildlife patient, the staff offers each visitor a tour of our facilities to help them understand our mission. We do not charge for the wildling they delivered to us or for the tour we provide. Thankfully, there are those who offer to leave a donation to help care for their rescued wildling, but most do not leave anything. It is not unusual to take in over 30 animals in one day and find less than $3.00 to $5.00 in our donation box at the end of the day!
