URGENT PLEA FOR FINANCIAL HELP AT BACK TO THE WILD
May 8, 2009

BACK TO THE WILD is presently facing a financial crisis. This struggling economic situation has created a great challenge for us. Donations have dropped off significantly, since many of our supporters are no longer in a position to spare extra cash. Animals (by the dozens) continue to arrive daily, but funding does not. I am determined to keep our doors open, but need YOUR help. If you are a charitable organization or business and are able to help in any way - your generosity and support would be greatly appreciated. Individual donations are also welcomed and are tax-deductible. Your gift will allow us to continue our work in wildlife rehabilitation and public education.

Remember, BACK TO THE WILD is completely self-funded. We depend 100% on private donations and do not receive any tax monies or state or federal help. Please consider helping us help wildlife! You are most welcome to visit and tour our facility to see the work being done here. Thanks so much for considering this request! Our Open House/Fundraiser is May 31st! We are in need of items to put in our garage sale and looking for some gently-used and new items for the Silent Auction, also.

If you are in a position to help, please contact Mona now, either by e-mail or by mailing a tax-deductible contribution directly to the center. Mailing address:
BACK TO THE WILD, P. O. Box 423, Castalia OH 44824
Telephone: 419-684-9539
e-mail: mona@backtothewild.com

DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE WITH AN INJURED ANIMAL?

If you know of an injured or orphaned animal, please consult our instructions for what to do. You need to be sure that an animal is, indeed, an orphan and not still under the care of its parent.

Snowy Owl released after rehabilitation Snowy Owl entangled in fishing lure
This Snowy Owl was returned to the wild, after being rehabilitated at BACK TO THE WILD®. She had arrived with her feet entangled in a twin treble-hook fishing lure. Her beak had also been caught in one of the same hooks. This owl was able to be released after rehabilitation since the person who found her called BACK TO THE WILD® right away.

Look here for helpful information and how to contact BACK TO THE WILD®.

NEWS FLASH! Open House was held on Sunday, May 31

Release of a red-tail hawk

A Back To The Wild Open House was held on May 31, 2009. Check this page for more information. The release of two rehabilitated hawks occurred during the open house! Check the page for a video of the release and other photos. Hundreds of people showed up that day.

NEWS FLASH! Orphaned eaglet inserted into foster nest on Thursday, June 4

Sometimes a local animal rescue is a bit dramatic. Check this Sandusky Register story about the rescue of two very young eaglets at NASA Plum Brook in mid-May 2009. The public was invited to the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge when one of the eaglets was fostered into an eagles' nest while two eaglets from that nest were being tagged. A few photos of the banding operation are available. Unfortunately, the severe injuries to the sibling eaglet means further rehabilitation before releasing him.

WILDLIFE RESCUE INFORMATION

BEST TO LEAVE THEM ALONE

It is easy to mistake UNATTENDED baby wild animals as "abandoned". Please watch from a distance and evaluate the situation. If you are unsure, call a rehabilitation center before removing them from their nest. In many cases, the mother is nearby, feeding or hunting for her young and will return when she feels it is safe to approach her nest. Even if you've mistakenly rescued a nest of babies, it is possible to REUNITE baby wild animals with their parent. In many cases, the mother will accept them back, even if you have touched them.

Do not plan on raising baby wild animals on your own. Young wildlife require special diets and care beyond what the average household is prepared to manage. Wildlife rehabilitators are fully licensed by both state and federal agencies, are able to provide proper diets, housing, and medical attention, and are adequately trained to care for and prepare an animal for survival and return to the wild.

Send us a note if you have a comment or question regarding the
BACK TO THE WILD® rehabilitation center.

If you are aware of a wild animal which you think needs assistance, you may contact BACK TO THE WILD® by telephone at 419-684-9539.

The center is located east of Castalia, Ohio at 4504 Bardshar Road. The center is about three miles south of the State Route 2 and State Route 101 intersection. Take SR 101 south about one mile to the intersection with Bardshar Road. Go south (left) on Bardshar one and a half miles to the center.

Castalia is about five miles southwest of Sandusky, Ohio.
